Dear Church,In Romans 5:20, Paul pens the radical words “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” Many believers, it seems, have conveniently stopped reading Paul’s letter at this verse. For instance, the Russian monk Rasputin is a famous historical example of “grace gone wild.” Rasputin, who dominated the Romanov family in their final year, taught that salvation came through repeated experiences of sin and repentance. He argued that because those who sin more require more forgiveness, those who sin with abandon will as they repent experience greater joy; therefore it is the believer’s duty to sin.
Christians are by no means immune from the temptation to slip from a celebration of grace to an abuse of grace. Some believers become complacent about sin because, after all, God is gracious and will forgive. In practice at least, we echo the French skeptic Voltaire: “God will forgive; that is his ‘business’.” Scripture teaches, however, that grace doesn't just save us from the penalty of sin, but it also saves us from the power of sin over our lives. Join us tomorrow as we learn about the freedom grace offers, particularly in relation to sexuality.
