Scary Christmas

Dear Mosaic Family,

When's the last time you felt fear? When's the last time you've been really afraid? Like cold sweat, racing heart, shortness of breath. As a kid, I remember feeling like this when I was sent to the principal's office for fighting (I didn't start it). I also remember accidentally ending up in the deep end of the pool before I learned how to swim, and having a panic attack, and almost drowning. I always feel a similar fear rushing over me when I know I've been driving too fast and get pulled over. Or when I hit a patch of black ice on route 90. Fear is the unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something dangerous or painful is about to happen. You feel fear when you recognize a threat to your well-being.

The feeling of fear isn't something we naturally associate with Christmas. However, three times, at key moments in the Christmas narrative, people are told to "Fear not!" Yes, seeing an Angel is probably a nerve-racking experience, in and of itself. However, I think there is more to it. They weren't just frightened by the Angel's appearance. They were frightened by the Angel's announcement.

Mary was frightened by the looming unknown miraculous conception. Joseph was frightened by the weight of the social stigma he would always bare for marrying a pregnant woman and probably a little rattled by being given the task of raising the Son of God. The shepherds were afraid they weren't good enough for God. But they are all told: "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people." When God breaks into your life, it's always scary, but his perfect love casts out all fear. Jesus turns any scary Christmas into a merry Christmas.

Join us tomorrow as we celebrate Christmas together!

Praying for you!Pastor Jan
