Dear Mosaic Family,
Happy New Year Mosaic!!
To welcome in 2017, we're starting a new sermon series tomorrow, called "Spiritual," in which we'll look at the practical ways of growing in your spirituality. Holy Scripture tells us in Ephesians 5:18, "Be filled with the Spirit." This is actually one of the most curious commands in all of Scripture. "Be filled" is an imperative, but it's in the passive voice. We're not told to fill ourselves with the Spirit, but to "be filled." How can I fulfill a commandment passively? Great question! This commandment is implying that we can't fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit, but we can place ourselves in situations and circumstances in which the Holy Spirit graciously fills us. Actually, the parallel passage to Ephesians 5 is Colossians 3, where Paul, instead of saying, "Be filled with the Spirit" says "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly." In St. Paul's mind, there was a direct relationship between being filled with God's Word and God's Spirit.
Tomorrow, we'll be looking at the connection between Holy Scripture and the Holy Spirit. Christians tend to gravitate toward one of two extremes regarding the third person of the Trinity. Some pursue experiences in the Spirit of God strictly apart from the Word of God. They listen for voices in their hearts or signs in the sky. They are always talking about what God said to them through a stirring, a feeling, or in a strange confluence of circumstances. Others, however, seek to know and obey the Word of God without and interaction with, or real dependence on, the Spirit.
But the Spirit and the Word work inseparably. We cannot experience the Spirit apart from the Word and we cannot understand the Word apart from the Spirit.
Join us tomorrow as we celebrate New Year's Day together and learn about how we can deepen our spiritual life!
Praying for you!Pastor Jan
