Thoughts & Prayers

As we continue our sermon series called "Spiritual" we'll look at prayer, the lifeblood of our relational connection with God. Whenever tragedy strikes, a phrase that is often used in our culture to express empathy is "Thoughts and Prayers," which is absolutely appropriate. We pray when we are desperate, when there's nothing else to do, because prayer is the involuntary reflex of the human soul. Prayer is an instinctive reaction in the face of hopeless situations. However, the Lord calls us to not just pray when we are desperate, but to prayer without ceasing.

Oswald Chambers once said, "We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first life of defense. We pray when there's nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything al all." Prayer isn't just to be used in the case of emergency. Prayer is how we commune with and encounter God himself. As we pray, we have access to the throne of God, himself, which is absolutely mind-blowing! I remember hearing a musician say he had the President's number and that they were so close, that he could text the President any time he wanted. Imagine being that close to the "leader of the free world"? That he would make time to read and respond to your texts? Well how much more amazing is it, that the God of the universe gives you and me access to himself!

As we begin 2017, let's look to the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6, to remind ourselves of the importance of prayer for our souls, and hence, our lives.

Praying for you! Pastor Jan
