The Mariana trench, found in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest location on Earth. It is 11,034 meters (36,201 feet) deep, which is almost 7 miles. It's so deep, that if you took the highest point on earth, the top of Mount Everest, flipped it upside down and placed it within the Mariana Trench, the peak would still be 2,133 meters (7,000 feet) from the bottom.
Why am I sharing this lovely geographic information with you (which you learned about in 3rd grade science)? Well, in Ephesians 2, the Apostle Paul is doing something similar with respect to our spiritual condition. In order to help us understand the lavishness of God's mercy, grace, and love, Paul explains the bleakness of our plight apart from Christ. He plunges us deep into the abyss of our sinfulness, where it's cold, dark, and the pressure is excruciating. We weren't just spiritually sick or ill, we were "dead in our sins and trespasses." We weren't just naughty, we were "children of wrath."
Then, when it seems almost unbearable, Paul shoots us up to the highest high of God's grace: "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved!"
Join us tomorrow as we study Ephesians 2, and give God all the glory for his glorious grace!
