Dear Mosaic Family,
Sadly, it was just reported this week that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are intending to officially file for divorce. The couple separated in 2015 after 10 years of marriage and have three children. Many saw cracks in the relationship when Affleck, after winning the Best Picture award for Argo at the 2013 Oscars, said the following to his wife in his speech: "I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It's good, it is work, but it's the best kind of work, and there's no one I'd rather work with."
Many criticized the statement as "lacking cuteness" and "focusing on the negative." Many didn't like that Affleck was uncomfortably honest about his relationship. Many were surprised that the real marriages of Hollywood stars didn't live up to the image of marriage as portrayed by Hollywood. If marriage is so natural, then why would it require work? And how come some couples, who are willing to put the work in, can't seem to make it work?
Since our culture doesn't have much of an answer to these question, many just say we weren't designed for marriage. Scarlett Johansson, who was recently divorced for the second time, said in an interview: "I think the idea of marriage is very romantic; it's a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a very beautiful thing. I don't think it's natural to be a monogamous person. The fact that it is such work for so many people -- for everyone -- proves that it is not a natural thing."
So is monogamy natural? If so, why does it take work? If not, how can we make marriage work?
Join us tomorrow as we study Ephesians 5, where God gives us His design for marriage, and his recipe to make the love last!
