Purse Collective Purpose over Personal Success

Dear Mosaic Family,

This past May, Mark Zuckerberg returned to Harvard to deliver the commencement speech. Instead of talking about leadership, risk-taking, or entrepreneurship, he surprisingly decided to talk about "purpose." He urged the graduates to commit their lives to a purpose greater than themselves; greater than status, salary, and the other traditional measures of "success."

"Purpose is that sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves," Zuckerberg said,
"that we are needed, that we have something better ahead to work for. Purpose is what creates true happiness."

He's right, of course. And yes, it's easy for him to talk about not pursuing the traditional measures of success since he's good there ($$$). However, a growing body of research backs him up. According to numerous recent studies, a sense of purpose is an increasingly strong predictor of happiness and even a powerful antidote to depression.

Purpose driven people are:

So purpose is great, but how do we find it?

I was right with Zuckerberg regarding the need for finding purpose, right up until he started giving his advice for finding it. Apart from a personal God, who has created us in His image for a defined purpose, it's impossible to talk about "finding a purpose" and you have to start talking about "creating a purpose." The main problem with this, is that "finding a purpose" is all about you... which nullifies the whole point of finding a "purpose greater than yourself." But I'm getting ahead of myself. Join us tomorrow as we study Nehemiah 3 and talk about pursuing collective purpose, not just individual success.

Praying for you,
Pastor Jan
