Advent: Joy

Dear Mosaic Family,

How is Christmas joy marketed nowadays? Well, you gotta have a huge Christmas tree decked out in red, gold, and navy blue decorations, bedazzled with white lights and an oversized silver star up top, with countless, beautifully wrapped presents underneath. Or Christmas joy is a brand new white Lexus with a huge red bow on top... "Look what I got you for Christmas, hunny!" Or perhaps Santa driving a slick shiny red Benz with white Benzes in front serving as his entourage of pseudo reindeer? And you can't forget the Budweiser Clydesdales delivering a fresh 30 rack. This is what Christmas joy is all about, right?

This manufactured Christmas "joy" is a far cry from the very first Christmas. In the very first Christmas, Christ does bring true joy into the world, but it comes amidst suffering, shame, and scandal. Unwed teenager Mary gives birth in a barn, with only freaking-out-Joseph to help deliver the baby. Once Jesus is swaddled, he is placed in a feed trough for animals, like an animal. God brings joy into the world, and it's swaddled in suffering.

Join us tomorrow as we meditate on Luke 2:1-21, and rediscover true joy.

Praying for you,
Pastor Jan
