Detox: 4 Weeks in Lent

Dear Mosaic Boston Family,

A detox is a process by which a person aims to cleanse the body of toxins or unhealthy substances. In the same way that our bodies incrementally and imperceptibly accumulate toxins, our souls do the same. A little here, a little there, and without realizing it, we've found ourselves in a spiritual funk.

During this year's season of Lent, we will spend 4 weeks going through a spiritual detox of sorts by analyzing the heart's deepest idols: significance, affection, comfort, and control.

This Sunday we'll revisit the story of Adam and Eve. When God created them, everything was perfect. They were glorious, and covered by the glory of God, blissfully "naked and unashamed." Once they rebelled against God, they immediately lost this covering of glory. The very first feeling after sinning was shame. They tried to cover their shame with fig leaves, but that wasn't enough, so they tried to hide themselves from God. When God came looking, they attempted to hide their shame from God by justifying themselves with excuses ("the wife you gave me, made me do it"). From there on out, every single human being who has ever lived is compulsively and involuntarily driven to cover that strange feeling of shame. Perhaps with fig leaves of money, degrees, awards, followers, clout, influence, friends, family, good works, etc.

Join us tomorrow as we dive in to the first installment in our Detox Series.

Praying for you!
Pastor Jan
